. that's the starting point. president obama and the house speaker speaking face to face for the first time in more than three weeks. the two men who stand between millions of americans and the fiscal cliff sat down, had a conversation. a critical development 22 days away from the cliff, which means severe tax hikes and spending cuts unless the two can find a way to compromise. nobody is saying much. but spokesperson says the lines of communication remain open erskin bowles said this. >> you know, they have started to tango now and any time have you two guys in there tangoing, have you a chance to get it done. >> our white house correspondent, brianna keilar, live in washington, d.c. this morning. it doesn't sound like very much. but i guess we're making a lot out of it, a first step. any indication where it goes next? >> we don't know where it goes next. they are saying the lines of communication are open. we're expecting the white house and the speaker's office, they are going to continue talking. we don't know when the meeting, the next meeting will be between president obama and th

. i will tell you the white house after not being very happy with the pace of negotiations the week before last sent treasury secretary tim geithner up to the hill to outline this proposal. there's a lot we already knew about that president obama had already taken a public position on. the white house is now saying to republicans as well, we want you to put the meat on the bones when it comes to the entitlement reform portion of this deficit reduction plan. that's politically very tricky, as you know, because a lot of times dealing with entitlements will be construed as cuts to medicare and that's often not very popular. as you can imagine that deal that you just outlined, not received very well by republicans on the hill. >> i think we're going over the cliff. it's pretty clear to me they've made a political calculation. this offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save medicare and medicaid, and social security from imminent bankruptcy. the president's plan when it comes to entitlement reform is just quite frankly a joke so i don't think they're serious abo

week president obama and speaker boehner talked about the fiscal cliff. it was by phone. both sides agreed that they would not talk about the details. what we do know is that it has not led yet to any major breakthroughs. we want to get to congressman steve latourette, republican from the state of ohio. he is leaving congress, decided not to run for re-election, citing gridlock as a big reason why. we appreciate your time with us this morning. >> thank you. >> can we start with syria first before we get to the fiscal cliff? we know that there's this red line that hillary clinton has talked about. but nbc news has reported that syria is loading chemical weapon components on to bombs, which could -- makes us think, well, what's the next step? to what degree does this mean military action for the united states? >> couple of things, the nbc report is unconfirmed. the other piece of news is that the secretary is expected to meet with the russian foreign minister in dublin, i believe, and talk specifically about getting the okay to put in place economic sanctions that would cripple the sy

. you've seen how the united states has reacted this week. president obama made a very pointed warning publicly to the syrian leadership. secretary clinton has done that twice on her current trip. secretary clinton will be meeting with the russian foreign minister and the u.n. mediator in syria today in brevlin. >> let's talk about those meetings. >> you can be sure that this issue of chemical weapons will be at the top of the list. >> no question about that. what are the options there? what can the international community do at this point if, in fact, they are already in a position where they're loading these components on to the weapons? >> well, one is this public message from the united states, from the nato secretary general and from the russians. the syrian government, including assad personally, will be held accountable. second is perhaps to see if the russians can use their influence. they're the big egest arms supplier to syria, the biggest ally that syria has, to dissuade the syrians from letting this chemical weapons loose or using them against the rebel alliance. if assad s
